Abstract

This study attempts to find out some extra-linguistic variables governing the use of Arabic (A) or Kurdish (K) or a blend of both (A-K) in terms of the phenomenon of 'code-switching', (CS), by the Kurds in the city of Mosul. Following Fishman 's formula 'Who speaks what language to whom, where and when " it is expected that language choice by Kurdish bilinguals is not an arbitrary phenomenon but is a function of various socio-economic and psychological factors such as 'topic ', 'participants ', 'situation ', 'mood' and 'purpose'..
